DEPUTY COMMANDER MARE SELLS FOR $200,000 AT FASIG-TIPTON!
PLAID, the multiple stakes winning daughter of DEPUTY COMMANDER, was puchased for $200,000 at the 2008 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Selected Mixed Sale. A thirteen-time winner and earner of $568,217 was consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, Agent XXV and she was purchsed by Vision Sales, 2008.

October 2008

Whatsamillion , 5yo gelding by Deputy Commander , broke his maiden in gate-to-wire fashion at Fresno on 10/13 setting all the fractions in the one mile race for 3yo's & up. He is owned & trained by BVF client Rafael DeLeon.

Madam Inspector , 2yo filly by Deputy Commander , broke her maiden in just her second time out in a 6f race for 2yo fillies at Woodbine on 10/12. Off the board in her first try, this time the young miss sped to the front early & never looked back on her way to a two length victory over six rivals.

River Mountain Rd , 8yo gelding by Deputy Commander , won a mile & 70 yards ALW race on 10/14 at Fonner Lakes earning his 14 th career win to go with nine second place finishes & six thirds from an amazing 53 starts! This victory over six other 3yo's & up increased his bankroll to over $349K.

Duty Roster, 4yo gelding by Deputy Commander , won a NW2X AOC 6f race on 10/3 at Pinnacle Race Course coming from off the pace to notch his fifth career victory. He also has five second place finishes & two thirds from a nineteen race career.

Strident , 7yo horse by Deputy Commander , earned a win in the I C T Ajmann II Fonds-rennen race at Germany's Mulheim Race Course on 10/3.

Itsalittleharsh , 2yo filly by Deputy Commander, broke her maiden in a MSW race for 2yo fillies going a mile & 40 yards on the dirt track at Finger Lakes on 10/18. Off as the overwhelming favorite, the filly came from off the pace to notch her first win in five starts. She also has a second place finish to her credit.

My Main Starr , 3yo filly by Deputy Commander , closed down the stretch in the $50K-added 7f HBPA Charles Town & Ranson Mayor Stakes for F&M 3yo & up at Charles Town on 10/17, recording her third stakes placing in her last four starts. After spending almost all but one of her first ten starts in allowance races, the filly stepped into stakes company for the first time on 6/28 at Delaware Park, & in her four starts since then has run second in two stakes at that track before her third place finish in the Ranson. In between, she took second in an ALW race at Laurel Park. Consecutive wins in ALW company at Charles Town & Delaware Park had earned her an entry into stakes competition. In 16 career starts, she has four wins, six seconds, two thirds, and three fourths, off the board just once for earnings of $146K. She is one of 35 North American stakes horses sired by Deputy Commander in addition to a stakes winner in Japan & champions in two other countries.

Runnin Da Fences , 3yo gelding by Deputy Commander , broke his maiden in a 6f race for 3yo's & up Hawthorne Race Course on 10/9. Previously the Keeneland sales grad had notched two third place finishes from four starts prior to finding the winners' circle for the first time.

September 2008

Scholarship , 3yo filly by Deputy Commander , won for the second time in her five race career as she bested six other 3yo fillies in an ALW race on 9/8 at Philadelphia Park going 6f in a time of 1:22.29. The winner's share of $26,400 boosted her earnings total to just over $65K.

Satin Rose , 3yo filly by Deputy Commander , had a big month as she first broke her maiden in a one mile & 70 yards MSW race at Remington Park on 9/7, crushing a field of six other F&M 3yo & up by a commanding 23 lengths. The $85K '06 KEESEP grad had twice hit the board before breaking through with her impressive maiden score. Later in the month, on 9/21, she moved up to AOC company & added $29, 900 to her bankroll as she won a NW1X one mile race, also at Remington Park, this time besting only four rivals by a widening six lengths at the wire.

Admiral Halsey , 3yo gelding by Deputy Commander, won a NW2L 6f race at Turfway Park on 9/3 vs. seven other 3yo's & up, notching his second win to go with three other on-the-board finishes from a ten race career.

Heaven On Hold , 3yo filly by Deputy Commander , pushed her career earnings over the $75K mark as she won a 6½f NW1X race on 9/1 at Hastings Racecourse, getting up at the wire by a neck over six other 3yo fillies.

Majestic Commander, 8yo gelding by Deputy Commander , surpassed the $200K mark in lifetime earnings by winning an AOC SNW1X 5½f race at Louisiana Downs on 9/28. The durable gelding has made 31 starts in which he had eight wins, six place finishes & one show finish, giving him earnings of $207,840.

Dusty Roster, 4yo gelding by Deputy Comander , earned his fourth career victory on 9/19 at Pinnacle Race Course in a 5f Allowance race for 3yo's & up. He also has five second place finishes & two third place finishes to his credit from an eighteen race career.

Silva Ducis , 3yo filly by Deputy Commander , earned her second consecutive stakes placing as she took second in the Premio Orchestra Stakes at the Firenze racetrack on 9/18 in Italy. Last month she finished second in the Premio Mura Medicee Handicap at the Grosseto Race Course, also in Italy.

Seekingreenandgold , 4yo gelding by Deputy Commander , found the turf course to his liking as he broke his maiden in a MSW one mile race on 9/28 at Remington Park. He had hit the board on four other occasions prior to his initial victory.

Coast Commander , 4yo gelding by Deputy Commander , a grad of both the '04 KEENOV & ‘05KEESEP sales, broke his maiden at Mountaineer Race Track on 9/27 in a 6f race vs. eight rival 3yo's & up, returning his backers with a nice win price of $56.40.

Seminole Savage , 3yo colt by Deputy Commander , broke his maiden in his third start in gate-to-wire fashion going a mile & 70 yards on the dirt at Suffolk Downs on 8/13. He is a KEESEP '06 Yrlng Sale grad.

Mean Minny , 4yo filly by Deputy Commander , broke her maiden on 8/16 at Mountaineer Racetrack as she overcame a slow start to get up in time over six other F&M 3yo's & up.

Majestic Commander , 8yo gelding by Deputy Commander , won for the seventh time in a 30 race career as he set all the pace to best eight rivals going 6½f on 8/24 at Louisiana Downs. The hard-knocking gelding also has seven other on-the-board finishes for earnings of $190K.

Advisable , 3yo filly by Deputy Commander, broke her maiden in a MSW race on 8/27 at Woodbine over fourteen rival F&M 3yo & up.

Farmington , 3yo gelding by Deputy Commander , broke his maiden on 8/30 in a MSW sprint race on the turf at Louisiana Downs. From an eight race career, he also has three other on-the-board finishes.

My Main Starr , 3yo filly by Deputy Commander , confirmed her newly-achieved status as a stakes performer on 8/31 with a second place finish in the Go for Wand Stakes at Delaware Park. Previously in June she had moved into stakes company for the first time, finishing second in the St. Georges Stakes, also at Delaware Park. Remarkably consistent, in 15 starts she's been off the board just once (early last year), & since then she's been on-the-board in 11 consecutive races & has won or place in nine of her last 10 starts, earning over $140K.

Houghton Regrets , 7yo gelding by Deputy Commander, earned his seventh lifetime win as he took a mile & 3/8ths Starter Handicap on the grass at Lone Star Park on 7/5. He then came back on 7/27 win again at the same track, that time going a mile & ½. The wins boosted the hard-knocking gelding's bankroll to over $157K from a line of 31-8-4-7.

Pretty Officer, 3yo filly by Deputy Commander , finished second in the Betterbet.com Hcp at Brighton racetrack in the UK on 7/7.

Strident , 7yo horse by Deputy Commander , took a second place finish in the Ferrycarraig Handicap at Wexford Racing Park in Ireland on 7/11.

A Little Off , 3yo filly by Deputy Commander, won a grassy one mile maiden race at River Downs on 7/19 to notch her first victory by sixth lengths over eleven other F&M 3yo & up. Despite being unruly in the post-parade & being bounced around at the start, she rallied from off the pace to draw off down the stretch to be much the best at the finish.

Aiace Telamonio , 4yo gelding by Deputy Commander, took a stakes placing in the Premio Gerfalco Stakes for 3yo's & up at the Grosseto track in Italy on 7/9.

Deputy Broad , 4yo gelding by Deputy Commander , broke his maiden on 7/16 at Woodbine in his fourth start, going 7f on the all weather track & getting up by a nose at the wire to beat seven other maiden 3yo's & up.

June 2008

Ambidaxtrous , 3yo filly by Deputy Commander , took third in the Elmont Stakes on 6/28 at Belmont Park in his second stakes effort. He has now earned over $87K with two wins, two seconds & a third place finish from eight starts.

M.J.'s Commander , 3yo gelding by Deputy Commander , stalked the pace before getting up by a neck in a 6f ALW race for 3yo's at Presque Isle Downs on 6/1. It was the winner's second win from nine starts. He also has three second place finishes & a third place finish to his credit.

Dubai Gold , 5yo gelding by Deputy Commander , became graded stakes placed in his first foray into stakes company as he took the show spot in the Grade 3 Singspiel Stakes at Woodbine on 6/22. A successful runner through four seasons of competition, he has now earned over $239 in almost exclusively two-turn races, with wins all the way up to the classic distance of 1¼ mile.

Later in the month, racing in stakes company for the first time, she finished second in the St. Georges Stakes on 6/28, also at Delaware Park. With winnings exceeding $112K, she now sports a 13-4-4-1 lifetime score.

Timely Command , 4yo filly by Deputy Commander, got up by a half length after a long drive to break her maiden on the turf course at Philadelphia Park on 6/9. The '05 KEESEP grad also has hit the board on four other occasions in her seven race career.

Hillbury, 3yo filly by Deputy Commander , broke her maiden at first asking in a MSW 6½f race on the turf for F&M 3yo & up at Woodbine on 6/5. In the process the winning miss earned over $38K for her connections as she was much the best in the field of eleven rivals, winning by nearly three lengths.

C R's Deputy , 4yo gelding by Deputy Commander , scored his fourth career victory on 6/7 at Pimlico taking the one mile turf ALW race over eight other 3yo's & up.

J. Pa , 3yo gelding by Deputy Commander , took his second win in consecutive months, this one a 6f ALW race on 6/6 at Arlington Park. Despite being bumped at the start, he was able to stalk the pace inside & drew off mid-stretch to take the win by three lengths.

Discreet Commander , 3yo gelding by Deputy Commander, already graded stakes placed, placed in another stakes race on 6/8 at Woodbine in the $150K Victoria Park Stakes. Later in the month, he took third in the Charlie Barley Stakes on 6/21, also at Woodbine. These two stakes placings boosted his lifetime earnings to over $179K from nine trips postward.

Lord in Command , 3yo colt by Deputy Commander, broke his maiden going 6½f at Hollywood Park on 6/13 in his first career start. After breaking slowly & getting bumped at the start, he made a five wide bid down the stretch to prove best.

Patapsco Commander , 3yo gelding by Deputy Commander, broke his maiden on 6/30 in a 5f turf race at Colonial Downs. He has four other on-the-board finishes.

A colt by Deputy Commander who is a half-brother to Belmont Stakes (G1) winner Da' Tara sold for $120K at the recent Ocala Breeders' June Sale of 2yo's in Training & HRA. The chestnut is o/o multiple stakes placed Torchera, (Pirate's Bounty) who is a full sister to G1 winner Private Persuasion.

Dubai Gold , 5yo gelding by Deputy Commander , scored his 6 th lifetime victory as he closed from last to first to take an AOC race on 5/3 at Woodbine. The $105K '03 KEENOV grad now sports a line of 21-6-3-4 with an earnings total exceeding $219K.

Houghton Regrets , 7yo gelding by Deputy Commander , found the winners' circle at Lone Star Park on 5/3 to take his sixth career win, this one in a Starter Handicap going a mile on the turf. The first place purse boosted his lifetime earnings to over $126K; he has ten other on-the-board finishes to go along with his six victories.

Entirely Honest , 3yo filly by Deputy Commander , a Fasig-Tipton grad, broke her maiden on 5/24 in a turf route race for fillies & mares 3yo & up. This win follows a previous third place finish from three lifetime starts.

Camp Commander , 4yo gelding by Deputy Commander , sped to an early lead before dropping back to third before taking the lead again in deep stretch to notch his second lifetime win, this one at River Downs on 5/23.

Admirality , 3yo colt by Deputy Commander, never off the board in five starts, became a two time winner as he came from off the pace to take a contentious mile & 1/16 th race at Churchill Downs on 5/3. His earnings from a line of 5-2-1-2 total nearly $100K.

Major Reality, 3yo colt by Deputy Commander , broke his maiden at Canterbury Park on 5/11 in his second start as he broke on top, sped to the lead & steadily widened his margin to nearly ten lengths at the wire.

No Reply , 4yo gelding by Deputy Commander , after winning three times at increasing distances, found a route that was a little too far & had to settle for a third place finish in the mile & one half Fit To Fight Stakes on 5/15 at Belmont Park. The race gave him his second stakes placing; last year he was second in the Ocala Breeders' Sale Championship Stakes. The talented veteran has earned over $165K in fourteen starts, with three wins, four seconds & three thirds.

J. Pa , 3yo gelding by Deputy Commander , scored his maiden victory on 5/18 over the all weather surface at Arlington Park in a MSW 6f race for 3yo's & up. He had previously notched a third place finish from two prior trips to the post.

Discreet Commander , 3yo gelding by Deputy Commander, already a stakes winner, became yet another graded stakes runner for his sire with a third place finish in the Gr3-Marine Stakes at Woodbine on 5/17. The KY bred, who has raced exclusively at Woodbine so far, has amassed earnings exceeding $152K in eight starts, including two wins (one in the 2007 Display Stakes) & two second place finishes as well as the third place finish on the 17th .

Quick Commander , 3yo filly by Deputy Commander, broke her maiden at Hollywood Park on 5/31 after two previous third place finishes as she fought back under left handed urging to gain the lead past midstretch & gamely prevail by a neck in the mile & 1/8 th race on turf.

He's a Big Daddy , 3yo gelding by Deputy Commander , notched his first win on 4/3 at Sam Houston Race Park as he came from off the pace to win a MSW race at Sam Houston Race Park in his fourth lifetime start. He had finished second & third in two previous contests.

Reporting for Duty , 4yo colt by Deputy Commander , scored his second Grade 2 placing in the past two months, the most recent coming in the Oaklawn Handicap on 4/5 at Oaklawn Park. Finishing behind 2007 Santa Anita Derby winner Tiago & this year's Santa Anita Handicap winner Heatseeker, the now almost half-million dollar earner bested such outstanding runners as Circular Quay, Buzzards Bay & Fairbanks. The well-traveled colt has placed in Gr.2 races at Hawthorne, Thistledown, the Fair Grounds & now Oaklawn Park in addition to winning non-graded stakes races at Sam Houston Park & Zia Park. In his last 11 starts, the first three being allowance races & then eight consecutive stakes races, he's been unplaced just once. Overall his record shows 16 starts, three wins, five second & three thirds for earnings of $466,846.

Commandeered , 3yo colt by Deputy Commander, found the winners' circle in his fourth career start after two runner-up finishes as he overcame a slow start to take a MSW 6f race at Keeneland on 4/9. From the powerful Zayat Stables & trained by Bill Mott, the winner was ridden out by jockey Kent Desormeaux to be much the best by over six lengths in notching his maiden win.

Lady in Command , 3yo filly by Deputy Commander , broke her maiden at Aqueduct on 4/11 following up a third place finish in a previous outing. Out of the G3 ($372,000) mare You'renotlistening, the winner is a $170K '04 KEENOV grad.

Lost Devil , 3yo filly by Deputy Commander, rallied down the stretch three wide to break her maiden 4/18 over the turf course at Gulfstream Park.

M.J.'s Commander , 3yo gelding by Deputy Commander , broke his maiden in a MSW race at Mountaineer on 4/19 sprinting 5½ furlongs over a muddy track.

Giant's Sister , 3yo filly by Deputy Commander & a half to MG3P Jersey Giant, broke her maiden in a MSW turf route race at Atlantic City on 4/24. In her previous four starts she has earned a second place finish & two third places finishes.

Usurp , 3yo gelding by Deputy Commander , broke his maiden in impressive fashion on 4/26 at Hollywood Park as he dueled for the lead then powered away in the final sixteenth over eight other maidens in the 6f MSW race, notching his first win after two previous runner-up finishes.

Cody's Quest , 3yo colt by Deputy Commander , broke his maiden by winning a one mile MSW race on 4/29 at Will Rogers Downs by coming from off the pace to wear down eight other 3yo's & up. He has also hit the board on three other occasions from a six race career.

Ambidaxtrous , 3yo filly by Deputy Commander , gained her second victory from six trips postward as she overcame traffic trouble at the 3/8 pole to prevail in an Allowance race at Belmont Park on 4/30. She also has two runner-up finishes.

Feb/Mar 2008

Reporting for Duty, 4yo colt by Deputy Commander, added more black type to his resume with a third Grade 2 placing in the New Orleans Handicap at the Fair Grounds on 3/8. His earnings now exceed $416K from a line of 15-3-5-2.

Madam Commander, 3yo filly by Deputy Commander, won a MSW race at Aqueduct on 3/2 notching her first victory to go along with two previous on-the-board finishes from five lifetime starts.

Admiralty, 3yo colt by Deputy Commander, gave trainer Nick Zito & owner/breeder Tracy Farmer a victory on 2/21 as he broke his maiden in a MSW at Gulfstream Park over a sloppy track. He has not been off the board in four career starts.

The Rare Commander, 3yo gelding by Deputy Commander, closed well late to break his maiden on 2/23 at Turfway Park taking the MSW race for 3yo’s by a neck for owner/breeder Alex Campbell, Jr.

First Commandment, 3yo colt by Deputy Commander, won an Allowance race for New York breds on 3/15 at Aqueduct as he came from slightly off the pace to win his second lifetime race from three starts.

March 13, 2008

Due to an undiagnosed health issue, Ballena Vista Farm’s stallion Deputy Commander has been removed from the breeding shed for the 2008 season. While not a life-threatening injury nor a contagious illness, the health issue is affecting his ability to effectively cover mares.

The onset of the problem over the past week prompted his admittance to the University of California at Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital where he has been undergoing comprehensive testing and treatment. It is expected that he will return to the Farm no later than mid-March.

While it is possible that the stallion could recover from his health issue in a matter of days or weeks, for the well-being of the stallion and to give owners who have mares booked to the stallion ample time to amend their mares’ breeding plans for the season, the Farm’s management team decided to suspend Deputy Commander’s breeding activities at this time for the duration of the 2008 season.

Owners who have mares booked to the stallion may opt to transfer their booking fee and contract to another Ballena Vista Farm stallion, or they may request cancellation of their mare’s contract to Deputy Commander and accept a refund of the booking fee. The Farm’s management is in the process of completing the task of contacting all mare owners who have booked mares to the stallion this season.

January 2008

HOUGHTON REGRETS,(’01 bay gelding o/o Fabulist, by Devils’ Bag), increased his lifetime earnings total to nearly $97K as he won a NW1X ALW race at the Fair Grounds on 1/1 coming from off the pace to get up in time to best eight rivals. The victory by the veteran gelding came in a one mile race for 4yo’s & up & was his fourth lifetime win in 22 starts.  Owner: Carl R. Moore Mgmt.  Breeder: Stonerside Stable in KY. 

JERI G, (’04 bay filly o/o Just Be Lucky, by Topsider), came from last to first to overtake the field of six other F&M 4yo & up to prove best by a length in a one mile race on 1/4 at Turf Paradise.  The win was her third lifetime to go with two runner-up finishes.  Owners: Frazier, Nielson & Hatch.  Breeder: Ramona Thomson in KY.

MAFIA QUEEN, (’04 dkb/br filly o/o Criminative, by Criminal Type), broke her maiden on 1/6 at Turf Paradise as she led ten other maidens from the first jump to finish first by a widening three lengths in a one mile turf race for F&M 4yo & up.  The filly, a KEESEP ‘05 yearling purchase, is a half-sister to NATIVE ANNIE (MSW, $336K), previously had one second & two third place finishes prior to notching her maiden score.  Owner: Honor Roll Racing.  Breeder: Stoneway Farm in KY.

REPORTING FOR DUTY,(’04 chestnut colt o/o Expanse, by Distant View), delivered his patented late charge to capture the $100K MAXXAM Gold Cup Hcp in dominating fashion at Sam Houston Race Track on 1/26.  After loping near the back of the six horse field through the first six furlongs, the winner uncorked a sweeping move & drew off by nearly five lengths.  The talented veteran of fourteen races stopped the teletimer in 1:52 1/5 for 1 & 1/8th miles on a track labeled good, improving his mark to 3-5-1, $366,846.  Runner-up in the Illinois Derby (G2) & the Oklahoma Derby, & third in the Ohio Derby (G2), Reporting for Duty broke through with his first stakes score in the Zia Park Derby in his previous start just last month.  Owners: Cathy & Bob Zollars.  Breeders: McMillin Brothers & James Devaney in KY.

HEAVEN ON HOLD,  (’05 bay filly o/o Abundantly Blessed, by Phone Trick), dueled on the rail at the outset then gamely held on to notch her first stakes victory in the Tiburon Stakes on 1/12 at Golden Gate Fields going 6f vs. seven other 3yo fillies in a speedy 1:09.93.  The winning miss now has two wins in three starts & earnings of over $50K. BABY DOLL BLUES, (’03 bay filly o/o Tava, by Mt.
